Recycle Bins

Page history last edited by Kayla S 14 years, 1 month ago

Some recycle bins are up...

A couple of us need to pick one to be in charge of emptying when necessary, at least until we figure out what sort of system we want to set up.

Upstairs:

by the stairs

by the back library door

Downstairs:

by the stairs (Kayla)

by the lockers in front of the girl's bathroom (Kayla)

These aren't necessarily the best places, but what is important is that they're up.

Now we need to get in the habit of emptying them.

Clyde has more for us to add when and where we see fit.

So I talked briefly to Clyde today, and here is the story with the recycle bins:
We don't need any to be donated. Clyde already has some that are put away. They used to be in the hallways, but too many people were putting trash in them and creating too much work for Clyde alone.
What this means:
There are extra recycle bins already at the school that we can use, under the condition that we maintain them. Maintenance is as simple as emptying them regularly into the big recycle bins (picking out whatever trash that might be in there). I think we should get them out right away and schedule people to empty them. I'm sure the schedule will have to be edited soon, though, once we figure out how much stuff goes there. I also think we should make up posters to put above each trash and recycle bin (which should hopefully be side by side) pointing out which bin is which (though one would think it should be obvious) and explaining what to put in it.
This should be a quick and easy thing for our club to do, but it could make a big difference in how much gets recycled at our school!

We also need to figure out how to keep people from tossing too much trash in the recycle bins. Posters only get you so far - most people do in fact know the difference between the two types of bins but are just too lazy to use the right one. So when a recycle bin is wide open and a trash can has a lid, you can see why the recycle bin is often used for garbage. So maybe we should figure out some sort of lid for the recycle bins so that they aren't chosen simply for convenience. Ideas? It could be as simple as a piece of cardboard with a hole to put in recyclables....

I'm not sure yet how to link to it from this page, but I've uploaded the simple flyers I made that we could stick above bins. If anyone would like to improve upon these or create something better, please do. To upload your own file or just see what's up there already, click the "upload files" button in the top right corner of any wiki page....

How about we get recycle bins set up and assign each person to a bin that they empty when they see fit.

I set up recycle bins in a couple of places in the hallways. We need to empty them into the big green bins when they need to be emptied.

And Mr. Moos saw me setting them out and ended up with one of his own. Which goes to show that it often doesn't take much to help people be "green" when they want to be.

Oops. Forgot to empty bins today. Clyde said the big ones got emptied today. I wonder how often they get emptied. Will try to completely empty bins tomorrow. Have been emptying them sometimes, and I've noticed someone else has too. Thanks to whoever that is.
